The theme this week is simple sides to accompany leftovers. This is a Zucchini Salad recipe from NYT Cooking. The zucchini is dressed very simply with pepper, oil and vinegar, big first it is lightly roasted in the oven with a little salt, which gives it a deeper flavor. Tasty, though we think it could have used a bit more vinegar. It gets a 3.

Almost Aam Panna from the June 2022 Bon Appetít. This is a new beverage for us. Aam Panna is a cool spiced minty Indian drink made from cooked green mango. This version uses applesauce in place of the mango. You are supposed to strain it before serving, but I didn't see the point. It is quite refreshing, peppery from the chaat masala snd minty. A little unfamiliar to a western palate but we'll worth trying! We give it a 4.

Stir Fried Iceberg Lettuce from the March 2022 Food and Wine is the new dish. You don't think of a cooked lettuce salad but this is pleasant. Adding some extra soy sauce is an option and would have been wise. This gets s 3.

Slow Cooker Dijon Chicken with Barley and Mushrooms from NYT Cooking. The recipe calls for cooking for 3 hours on high, we did 8 hours on low for convenience. It was a bit gummy but still had nice layers of flavor with the addition of the Dijon and tarragon. We give this a 3.

Green Curry Glazed Tofu from NYT Cooking. Vibrant flavors. The green curry is a dominant flavor though you can still taste the vegetables. Consider trying the lower end of the range of the amount of curry paste if you want the vegetables to stand out more, but still quite tasty. We give this a 4.

Skirt Steak with Lentil Salad from NYT Cooking. This is a recipe from Pierre Franey from 1990 snd it is still flavorful with layers of complementary flavors. We give this a 4.

Smashed Potatoes with Thai Style Chile and Herb Sauce from NYT Cooking. Carl is still raving. The sauce is wonderful, and the boiled then roasted potatoes are unctuous! We give this a 5!

Grilled Merguez and Onions with Mint Lemon Couscous from NYT Cooking. We didn't have merguez so we used andouille. It was delicious! A fair amount of chopping but came together pretty fast and has layers of flavor. This gets a 5.

Spicy Braised Tofu from Epicurious, and Peeled Asparagus Salad with Radish and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds from NYT Cooking. The tofu is stunning and gets a 5. The sajad gets a 4.

New recipe, June 4, 2022
Pork Tenderloin Saltimbocca from the June 1, 2022 Denver Post. This has pleasant flavors but didn't particularly stand out for us. We give this a 3.
New recipe, June 3, 2022
Chocolate Chile Biscotti from NYT Cooking. Be careful with the first bake. The loaf will still be soft when it is done, and you don't want to char the bottom. Finished, it has rich chocolate, with enough ancho Chile to notice but not burn. Maybe could use a touch more sugar but ? We give these a 5.
New recipe, June 2, 2022
Tomato Soup from NYT Cooking. This is a rich and very flavorful cream of tomato soup. It looks simple, but has wonderful layers of flavor. Makes a thankfully bigger pot! We give it a 5.
New recipe, June 1, 2022
Egg Curry from NYT Cooking. This is very tasty and rich, and not very picante. It is very comforting. We give this a 4.

Polenta with Asparagus Peas and Mint from NYT Cooking. Great flavors (including a healthy dollop of butter). We give this a 4.
New recipe, June 29, 2022
Humm Dogs from the October 2017 Food and Wine. The truffle Mayo and homemade relish make this! Very tasty, we give it a 4–the Mayo was a bit salty. Served with an impromptu watermelon salad with lime and salt.

Aunt Theara's cornbread (a family recipe) and a riff on Slow Cooker Beans and Ham from Back to My Southern Roots. The cornbread spent too much time on the stove before going into the oven and so was a bit charred. We will do this again to get the crust crispy but not charred. We had trouble finding a ham bone without 10 pounds of meat attached so used smoked Turkey legs. It was tasty but over emphasized the meat. It gets a 3 as made.
