Eggplant Salad from NYT Cooking. This is a total 5! The smokiness from the charred eggplant plays so well with the dressing of fish sauce, lime juice, brown sugar, garlic and pepper flakes. Stunning!

Sancerre Poached Scallops with Soft Grits from the April 2017 Food and Wine. This is disappointing to us. We love scallops, but the poaching in wine hides the flavors of the scallops. The grits are very good! We give this a 2.

Vietnamese Tomato Salad from the June 2021 Bon Appetít. Really nice flavors. We used a wax pepper from our garden which was tasty but on the small side. We think this could have been a bit spicier, which would have been managed with a second pepper. We give this a 4.

Watermelon and Snap Pea Salad from the June 2021 Bon Appetít and Hot Dogs and Pico de Gallo from NTY Cooking. The salad is delicious, and we thought would benefit from a little more soy and fish sauce in the dressing. It gets a 4. The hot dogs are really nice. They are butterflied and grilled, and then smothered in pico de gallo on a toasted bun. Simple, but really nice. We give this a 4.

Rasta Pasta with Jerk Chicken from NYT Cooking and Madeira Braised Swiss Chard with Garam Masala Sultanas and Toasted Almonds from the April 2022 Food and Wine. The pasta is quite good, with the dominant flavor of jerk seasoning. It needed more salt. We give it a 4. The chard is delicious—the Madeira and Indian spices work together very well. We give it a 5.

Microwave Steamed Eggs from NYT Cooking. This is interesting. I used vegetable broth, which is what we had, but it didn't seem to be a great match. This would be better with dashi or chicken broth—something a bit more delicate. As made it gets a 3.

Best Gazpacho from NYT Cooking. Yes, it is a blended gazpacho, and with fantastic flavors. The recipe calls for 2 tsp of salt, which we think is too much. We would use 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. As made it gets a 4, with a bit less salt it will be a 5.
